Remembering the Dallas Air Show Mid-Air Collision: Honoring Aviation Heritage and Lessons for the Future

In November 2022, a commemorative event meant to celebrate the legacy of World War II aviation turned into a moment of deep reflection for the aviation community. During the Wings Over Dallas Airshow, two historic aircraft — a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra — were involved in a tragic mid-air collision that drew worldwide attention.

The incident underscored both the enduring fascination with vintage aircraft and the importance of continuous improvement in aviation safety standards.

The airshow was designed as a living tribute to aviation history, showcasing legendary aircraft that once played key roles in global events. The B-17 Flying Fortress, a symbol of strength and resilience, and the P-63 Kingcobra, a rare fighter of the 1940s, were part of a heritage flight designed to inspire and educate spectators.
